    About this layer

Hillfort records identify sites associated with enclosed or defended hilltop settlement. Use them to understand the history of the surrounding landscape. Many such sites have protections, so a marker is for research rather than an invitation to detect.

    What it is for

Read the available record and compare its date, description and location with other historical sources.

    Limits

Record locations may be generalised or approximate. Historic interest does not establish permission to detect or disturb a site.

    About this layer

Airborne studies map features identified through aerial photographs or other airborne surveys. They can reveal traces such as earthworks and cropmarks that are hard to see at ground level. An interpretation is a research clue and may have an uncertain date or purpose.

    What it is for

Compare the mapped features with terrain and imagery, and check the period or study selected.

    Limits

These are interpretations of survey evidence. Survey extents and blank areas do not prove the presence or absence of archaeology.

Heritage records identify places recognised for their cultural or historic importance. Use the records to understand the history and protection of an area. A heritage marker is for research, not an invitation to search or disturb the site.

    Terrain+™ Analysis

Outline an area of any shape up to 3 miles across over the Environment Agency's 1 m lidar (England) and see the ground full screen as a 3D surface, with a VE slider to raise or flatten it. Any layer can be draped over it. It shows Dynamic LiDAR™, turned on as it is built, and its LiDAR button sets Dynamic LiDAR™'s look on the model and the map alike: hillshade, slope, local relief, sky view and openness, multi-scale relief, VAT, red relief, Multi-Light PCA or the SVF/LRM Composite, each with settings to bring out the features you are after. Save a model with the button beside the X to keep it on the phone for 30 days and open it from the Terrain+™ LiDAR menu in the field, without a connection.

    About this layer

Dynamic NDVI™ draws how green and vigorous the plants are over the map on the phone as you move: water below 0, bare ground near 0, thick growth near 1. Choose drought classes, smooth colours or viridis, set the range the colours spread over, or let Scale colour to screen stretch them over what is in view. Crop and parch marks can follow buried features, but season, crops and moisture make similar patterns.

    What it is for

Open its filter in Active Layers to choose the colours and the range they spread over, or turn on Scale colour to screen to stretch them over the ground in view; compare patterns with the lidar and old maps.

    Limits

Season, crops, moisture and the image date shape the pattern. It needs a connection, and new ground takes a moment to draw.
